Dog-Friendly Days Out in North Norfolk

North Norfolk is a wonderful place to explore with a dog by your side. With wide beaches, peaceful marshes and miles of countryside paths, there is plenty of space for both people and paws to stretch their legs.

If you are visiting the area with a four-legged companion, here are a few simple ideas for dog-friendly days out along the coast and in the countryside.

North Norfolk is a wonderful place to explore with a dog by your side. With wide beaches, peaceful marshes and miles of countryside paths, there is plenty of space for both people and dogs to stretch their legs.

If you are visiting the area with a four-legged companion, here are a few simple ideas for dog-friendly days out along the coast and in the countryside.

Walk the wide sands at Holkham

Few places feel as open and expansive as Holkham Beach. The walk begins through the pine woods before opening out onto a huge stretch of sand.

It is easy to see why this beach is a favourite with dog owners. There is plenty of space to roam and explore, and much of the beach is available for dogs to enjoy off lead under control. Some areas ask for dogs to be kept on a lead during the bird nesting season to protect wildlife.

Early mornings and late afternoons are particularly peaceful, with big skies and long views across the coast.

Stroll between Wells and Holkham

The walk between Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham Beach is a favourite with locals and visitors alike.

Starting near the colourful beach huts at Wells, you can follow paths through the pine woods and along the edge of the dunes. At low tide the beach itself stretches for miles, giving plenty of room for energetic dogs to run.

There are cafés nearby where dogs are welcome, making it an easy place to stop for a drink before heading back.

Explore the salt marshes at Blakeney

For a quieter walk, the paths around Blakeney and Blakeney Point offer beautiful views across the salt marshes.

The landscape here feels wide and peaceful, with seabirds wheeling overhead and boats resting in the creeks. It is a gentle walk rather than a long hike, but it is full of character and changing scenery.

Dogs are welcome on many paths, though it is always best to keep them under close control near wildlife.

Discover quiet corners at Thornham

If you prefer somewhere a little less busy, Thornham Beach is well worth seeking out.

From the small harbour, you can walk along a raised embankment that leads towards the sea. The beach itself is often quiet, with no dog restrictions, making it a good choice for a relaxed walk.

The surrounding marshes are also rich in birdlife, so it is a lovely place to slow down and enjoy the landscape.

A gentle reminder about beach rules

North Norfolk is very dog-friendly, but some beaches have seasonal restrictions. In a few places, dogs are not allowed or must be kept on a lead between 1 May and 30 September, especially near busy promenades or protected wildlife areas.

Signs at the beach entrances usually make the rules clear. Keeping dogs under control helps protect wildlife and ensures everyone can enjoy the coast.

Enjoying North Norfolk with your dog

One of the joys of North Norfolk is the sense of space. Long beaches, open marshes and quiet lanes make it easy to spend the whole day outdoors.

Whether you are walking along the sand, exploring coastal paths or simply stopping at a village café, North Norfolk offers plenty of simple pleasures for visitors travelling with their dogs.
