Discovering Norfolk’s Wild Side: A Day Out at Watatunga Wildlife Reserve

If you’re planning a holiday in Norfolk and looking for something a bit different to do - something with a real sense of adventure - let me point you in the direction of one of Norfolk’s finest days out: Watatunga Wildlife Reserve.

Tucked away in West Norfolk, this stunning 170-acre reserve of lakes, marsh, and grassland feels like stepping into another world - one where deer, antelope, and rare birds roam freely, and you get to observe it all from the comfort of your very own electric buggy. Drive yourself on a safari-style tour through the reserve, led by an expert guide in a separate buggy, chatting to you via a radio. Whether you’re travelling with kids, friends, or going solo, it's an absolute hit.

We were kindly gifted a trip to Watatunga on Good Friday 2025, and the tour was one of the highlights of our Easter break. The whole experience is so well thought out, from the eco-friendly buggies to the informative and often funny commentary from the guide. No two tours are the same either; the animals move at their own pace, and where they’ll be depends on weather and time of year.

Some of our highlights? ‘Dave’ the Great Bustard, who thinks he owns the place, his strut and attitude had everyone in stitches. Then there’s the incredibly rare Mountain Bongo, a critically endangered antelope that’s as beautiful as it is elusive. And getting up close to the Malayan Sambar deer, which you won’t see in many places outside their native range, was just incredible.

The tours run regularly from Easter to the end of October, and you’ve got a few different options depending on your preferences, ranging from Sunset Safari to Sunday morning trailer tours.

Watatunga isn’t just about the tour - it’s a full experience. You can book a photography session, plan a private event, or even have a BBQ in their lakeside hut. Whether you’re a wildlife enthusiast or just fancy doing something a bit different during your Norfolk holiday, Watatunga hits the sweet spot between education and excitement.

Plus, it’s worth noting: they’re not just putting on a show here. This place is all about conservation, sustainable tourism, and creating a safe, natural environment for endangered species. That care and purpose shines through in everything they do - it’s not just a fun day out; it feels like you’re supporting something that truly matters.

Tips for Visiting:

  • Book in advance - tours are guided and have limited capacity

  • Bring binoculars if you have them, though you’ll still get great views up close

  • Dress for the weather - it’s an open-air experience

  • Don’t forget your camera - there are plenty of photo opportunities!
