A Day Out at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse: History, Play, and Piglets!
We were recently kindly gifted a trip to Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, and what a day it turned out to be! Nestled in the Norfolk countryside, this unique attraction brought together rich history, hands-on learning, and good old-fashioned fun. A true hidden gem, Gressenhall surprised us in the best possible way, offering something for everyone - from curious young explorers to history-loving adults.
Step Into the Past
While wandering through the atmospheric workhouse museum, one of the children innocently asked, “Is this what things were like when you were little?” - a moment that made me laugh out loud, but also captured just how immersive the experience was.
Originally opened in 1777 as a House of Industry, Gressenhall’s workhouse museum does an outstanding job of bringing the past vividly to life. As we followed the whitewashed corridors and passed heavy wooden doors, we encountered life-sized projections of former staff and inmates. These cleverly integrated displays, combined with first-hand audio accounts - sometimes moving, sometimes uplifting - gave real depth to the experience. You don’t just read about the people who lived and worked here; you begin to understand their struggles, hopes, and resilience. It’s history made personal and powerful.
Gressenhall Farm: Rare Breeds and Tractor Rides
One of the day’s highlights was our time spent on the working farm. Historically, this land provided food for the workhouse residents, but today it’s a celebration of rural heritage, complete with rare breeds, traditional techniques, and plenty of chances to meet the animals.
The piglets were an instant hit, they were so tiny and wriggly! The kids were smitten, and I must admit, so were we. Standing beside the majestic Suffolk Punch horses was another unforgettable moment; their sheer size and gentle presence were awe-inspiring. Later, we clambered aboard a tractor-trailer for a relaxed ride around the farm, taking in sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and getting a real sense of the land’s history and rhythm.
Living History in the Village
Our journey through time continued at Village Row, a wonderfully recreated set of historical village shops. The children were fascinated by the general store, immediately setting up a game of “shopkeeper,” completely enchanted by the tiny boxes of Cadbury’s Roses on display.
We visited the post office, peeked into a traditional blacksmith’s forge, and explored the seed merchant’s shop, learning all about the story of Taylor’s of King’s Lynn. Each stop was thoughtfully presented, with plenty of interactive elements that made the past feel not just accessible but alive.
Summer Events, Face Painting & Crafts
Gressenhall is more than a museum - it’s a dynamic, ever-changing site with a packed calendar of seasonal events. During our visit, a summer celebration was in full swing, complete with arts and crafts, storytelling, and face painting. The children were in their element, proudly showing off their ladybird and caterpillar designs. I even considered joining in myself, just for fun!
TIP: Coming up on 24th August 2025, don’t miss Home Front Stories: Norfolk in 1945, a special event commemorating VE and VJ Day. Expect costumed interpreters, hands-on wartime activities, and powerful storytelling that brings this pivotal moment in history vividly to life. It’s a perfect day out for the whole family.
Adventure Playground & Perfect Picnic Spot
No family outing is complete without a brilliant playground - and Gressenhall certainly delivers. The adventure play area is expansive, with rope bridges, a zip wire, slides, swings, and more. While the kids let off steam, we found a peaceful picnic bench under a tree and tucked into our lunch. With the sun shining and laughter echoing across the field, it was one of those simple, perfect moments you remember.
A Moment of Calm in Cherry Tree Cottage Garden
After all the activity, we made our way to the tranquil Cherry Tree Cottage garden. The air was filled with the scent of lavender, box, and blooming roses, and the garden’s quiet corners offered a much-needed moment of calm. With tall hollyhocks swaying and bees buzzing lazily in the sun, it felt like stepping into a secret, timeless space.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re passionate about social history, love animals, or are just looking for a fun, educational day out with the family, Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse ticks every box. The thoughtful storytelling, engaging exhibits, and beautiful setting made a lasting impression on us.
We’ll definitely be returning, and we highly recommend adding Gressenhall to your itinerary for your next Norfolk holiday. It’s a place that educates, entertains, and inspires - all in one visit.
