Salthouse

Salthouse is a picturesque, unspoilt village located on the North Norfolk Coast just north of the small market town of Holt, and just east of Blakeney and Cley.

Salthouse is a situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and overlooks the salt marshes next to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve at Cley, which has the well-deserved reputation as one of the UK’s premier bird watching sites. The brand new environmentally friendly visitor centre incorporates an observation area, a café, and sales area. Four hides (with excellent wheelchair access) provide bird watching within metres of the pools where the birds congregate.

Clustered around the village green are pretty cottages, a pub with a large front garden that looks directly over the salt marsh, Cookies Crab Shop offering platters of seafood, salads, sandwiches and ice cream. East of the village, past the village pond, is a cottage where you can buy Fish & Chips during the summer months.

The magnificent church of Salthouse towering over the village holds regular art exhibitions and concerts throughout the year.

Behind Salthouse, rising some two hundred feet above sea-level, are the heathlands, criss-crossed with many ancient roads; a wonderful place for a walk - with fabulous views across the village and to the sea.

The beach is mainly pebble and shingle, but unlike other parts of the Norfolk coast, the tide does not go out very far. Parking is easy and it is perfect for a picnic, where you can watch the shore fishermen, the birds, and gaze at the long vistas along the beach.
