Thornage is in the Glaven Valley Conservation Area, the largest conservation area in the County. It includes the countryside and villages along the river Glaven and its tributary streams. The village is surrounded by water meadows, small patches of woodland and a network of small lanes, in gently rolling countryside. Thornage was apparently known for basket making, using willows from the water meadows. It lies just south of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which follows the coast.

The village no longer has a pub or local shop. It is about 3 miles from Holt, a small market town with an unusually wide range of shops; about 2 miles from pubs at Letheringsett and Hunworth, and about 6 miles from the nearest coastal villages, Cley-next-the-Sea and Blakeney. Other coastal towns, such as Sheringham, Cromer and Wells-next-the-Sea are also in easy motoring distance.
